Corsair VX550W OUT! Corsair VS550W IN! Review

The Corsair VX550W Enthusiasts Series (with 5 Years warranty ) stopped working and shutdown my PC abruptly, while in the middle DOTA 2 session with my cousin yesterday. Aaarh!

But it served me and its previous owner for good 5 years and 10 months!

My Dead Corsair VX550

So I went to the Ritchie Street, the Mecca of Electronics Shopping in Chennai and bought the Corsair VS550W Builder Series (with 3 Years warranty) for Rs. 3,300, as the replacement for VX550. The model is Corsair CP-9020097-UK VS550 (made in Hong Kong, China, Mfg & Date of Import OCT 2016).

Yeah! I do need to work on my cable management skills :P

After coming home, I opened the package and was stumped to see that it came with UK Power Cable (Rectangle pins with 13A fuse beneath the plug) instead of Standard Indian version (Round pins). Why Corsair selling their products in India with UK version of Power Cable is beyond me.

I do have a universal power strip. So I plugged in the UK Power Cable in the universal power strip, which in turn is connected to my APC UPS. Then switched on my PC only to hear a loud warning sound from VS550. Immediately switch off the new PSU. Seemed like there is a compatibility issue between my universal power strip and the UK Power Cable. Meanwhile, I'm using the old power cable with the new VS550 which is powering my PC fine for now.

Since I've paid for the product, I've registered a complaint with Corsair asking for the cable replacement. If they refuse, I've no other go but to spend extra for a new cable. So for now, I've to wait and see what Corsair's response is. That would take two business days according to Corsair. Today is Saturday. So most probably can expect a response only on or after Wednesday (30-11-2016) :|

Beyond this power cable debacle, the Corsair VS550 seems like a solid PSU, which powers my XFX HD6950 2GB Graphics Card, Intel i5-2400 Processor, Corsair 12GB RAM, 2x500GB HDD PC config smoothly. It comes with 1x6-pin and 1x8-pin (which can also be used as 6-pin) PCI-E power connectors. My HD6950 needs 2x6-pin, so I've used the other 8-pin as 6-pin to power it. Delivers a solid 42A on its +12V single rail, good enough to power any of the following single modern GPUs:
